Private Institutions of Education in Massachusetts

Private Colleges and  Universities in Massachusetts

According to today's research, there are approximately 164 private colleges and universities in the state of Massachusetts alone. These private institutions are often non-profit organizations that are not operated by the government in anyway and rely heavily on private funding. Private institutions have the ability to set their own policies and goals because of the independence they are allotted.

Although private institutions greatly outnumber the amount of public institutions, there is one factor that makes them more difficult for people to attend them: PRICE. The tuition at these private universities is often thousands of dollars more than the public institutions. According to s study done by College Board, the average tuition at a private university is about $33,500 while the average tuition for a state resident at a public university is about $9,650. Although the tuition for out of state students at a public university is more expensive, it does not surpass the tuition of a private university.  More information about the varying costs of universities can be found at:

Despite the increased prices of these private universities, they still remain as the most numerous institutions. Often, people have no choice but to attend a private institutions that is out of their price range simply because they do not have access to a less expensive public institution. Students are left with serious debt, even after they graduate and become employed. In order to help stop this cycle of debt, we need to start focusing on creating more affordable public education options for students. The number of public institutions should one day be equivalent to the large number of private institutions in Massachusetts. Education is a crucial part of life and it should be affordable for everyone.

  1. I like the first graphic but it's a little hard to read parts of it. The rest is good overall. The map is descriptive but doesn't offer any analysis. Use the selection features to create new map layers with new information, like in the lab.
